It’s hard to walk on any trail in late spring to early fall and not see some type of lizard run across the trail or sunning on a rock. Northeastern Arizona has several species (kinds) of lizards.
DO NOT TRY TO CATCH LIZARDS! Most lizards are capable of inflicting a painful bite, and some are even venomous. See Gila Monster.
Collared Lizard
Collared lizards can get up to 15″ in length.
They have a very large head and a black and white collar.
Their skin color is yellowish brown to green, with bluish highlights on the body.
Collard lizards eat large insects and small lizards.
Horned Lizard
The following video is about Flat-Tailed Horned Lizards, which can be found in southwest Arizona. But some of the information in the video is common for other species of horned lizards found in northeastern Arizona.
