Pinyon Jay

Distance: 3.6 miles

Facilities: None

Difficulty: Easy to  moderate.

Parking: Sunrise to sunset. Parking at designated site only.

Access: From the Lakeside Ranger District office, travel northwest 5.3 miles on White Mountain Blvd. to the traffic light at the junction of Buck Springs Road. Turn left and proceed ½ mile to the junction of Sky Hi Road (Forest Road 182). Turn left and drive 1.1 miles to trail-head parking on left.

Highlights: This is a good beginner trail with little change in elevation. During rainy seasons, the trail may be quite muddy. The most distinctive segment is where it crosses and parallels Billy Creek and Thompson Creek. Areas in close proximity to streams and wetlands harbor a wide variety of interdependent plant and animal life. Watch for signs of wildlife that are directly dependent on the creeks, as well as those that are attracted by ample food and cover.

Connector Trails: The Little Bear Connector Trail links to the Blue Ridge Trail, a short distance away. The Iron Horse Connector Trail (1 mile in length) links to the Country Club Trail.
