Great Horned Owl

Parking: Sunrise to sunset at designated trail-head only.

Access:

• From the Lakeside Ranger District office, travel southeast on White Mountain Blvd. 0.2 of a mile.
• Turn left onto Porter Mountain Road.
• Proceed north 1 mile to trail-head; parking area immediately on right.

Highlights: This trail traverses stream and ponderosa pine habitats where associated bird species are found, as well as smalland medium-sized mammals. Mule deer and elk are occasionally seen. The  trail follows Porter Creek, past the south side of Scott Reservoir and climbs in elevation to connect with the Blue Ridge Trail.

Midway on the trail is the Ice Cave, a lava tube from which a constant fl ow of cool air, 52° F, emanates. The cave is fenced for preservation.

Connector Trails: The Osprey Connector Trail leads to the Timber Mesa Trail.
